Course Description/Meeting Summary:

Social media can provide so many opportunities for student learning but with potential pitfalls and an ever changing technology landscape, educators could use some guidance to get things started. In this session, you will learn practical steps for implementing social media effectively, safely and purposefully in the classroom. Participants will identify & evaluate appropriate tools based on instructional strategies. Some tools that will be explored include Padlet, Google Docs, PenPal Schools, Discovery Ed Virtual Field Trips, Expeditions, etc. You will leave with digital citizenship resources to set the stage for social media use and practical ideas for integrating social media tools in your instruction.

What steps should educators take when integrating social media in their classroom as an instructional learning tool? Social media can provide so many opportunities for student learning but with potential pitfalls and an ever changing technology landscape, educators could use some guidance to get things started. By the end of this session you will learn strategies for integrating social media in your classroom including how to: prepare for social media use by addressing district policies & student privacy, build a culture of digital citizenship in your classroom, integrate social media in your instruction that is skill based & age appropriate, identify & evaluate appropriate tools based on instructional strategies and address challenges & celebrate wins. You will leave with digital citizenship resources to set the stage for social media use and practical ideas for integrating social media tools in your instruction.
