Course Description/Meeting Summary:
The Curriculum and Digital Learning department, in partnership with Dr. Sarah Giuliani, an adjunct professor with UFLI (University of Florida Literacy Initiative) is pleased to invite you to our upcoming professional learning series on the Science of Reading for Secondary Content Areas. This series is intended for all content area teachers including math, science, social studies and ELA to move beyond ELA-specific to provide practical, research-based strategies for addressing the critical reading challenges faced by our middle and high school students. Instructional coaches and administrators are also welcome to attend.

Part 4: Deepening Comprehension and Using Writing to Learn
· Explore practical techniques for scaffolding complex texts and using text structure (like compare/contrast, cause/effect) to help students build knowledge and understand the main ideas in your subject area. Learn how to use quick, targeted writing activities (like summarizing or explaining a concept) that don't take up much class time but dramatically accelerate students' understanding and retention of new material.
